The compression tester is what I use in the workshop to test this. Modern engines come with a compression release mechanism, making it easier to start them. For more modern engines, I use a leak-down test. A tested engine holds pressure for a specified amount of time after having air pumped into it.

FIX: Use a baking soda solution containing 2 cups of water and 3 tablespoons of baking soda to clean corrosion from the terminals. You can clean the terminals using a wire brush.

A multimeter can be used to test your battery. The reading needs to be around 12.7 volts. The battery should be charged if your reading is below this.

Getting Rid of Your Troy-Bilt’s Clogged and Dirty Carburetor

Having a dirty carburetor can prevent your engine from getting the gas and air mixture it needs to start and run. You need to replace any failed parts with a clean carburetor.

Clean your carburetor if you have some mechanical ability. Carburetors are composed of many small parts.

In case you are not familiar with cleaning your carburetor, you can have your local small engine mechanic do so or you can have it replaced.

Carburetor cleaner should be used to clean the carburetor, including the float bowl and needle, after taking it apart. These are the steps you need to follow to clean your carburetor.
